Robert Dale Rogers
Herbalist · Ethnobotanist · Author · Educator
Robert Dale Rogers has spent more than five decades studying the relationships between people, plants, fungi and medicine. His work brings together field observation, traditional knowledge, clinical herbalism and contemporary research to understand the medicinal possibilities of the natural world — particularly the plants and fungi of the boreal forest.

Knowledge & practice
What Robert carries
- 01
Medicinal Plants & Herbalism
More than five decades of studying plant medicine have given Robert a deep working knowledge of medicinal plants, their identification, preparation, traditional applications and contemporary research. His approach combines careful observation with an understanding of how plants have been used across generations and how that knowledge continues to evolve.
- 02
Medicinal Mushrooms & Fungi
Robert has devoted a significant part of his career to understanding medicinal fungi. His work explores identification, ecology, traditional and contemporary uses, preparation and the compounds that have made mushrooms an important area of medicinal research.
- 03
Ethnobotany & Traditional Plant Knowledge
Plants carry human histories as well as ecological ones. Robert’s work examines relationships between people and plants across medicine, food, culture and place, bringing historical and traditional knowledge into conversation with contemporary botanical and pharmacological research.
- 04
Boreal Forest Ecology
Robert’s knowledge is grounded in the landscapes where organisms live. Trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants, fungi, lichens and mosses become easier to understand when considered as members of an ecological community rather than isolated specimens.
- 05
Field Identification & Plant Practice
Knowledge becomes different when it is encountered outside. Robert’s field teaching brings identification, habitat, medicinal use, preparation and ecological observation together, helping learners build the confidence to recognize organisms and continue studying them independently.
About Robert
The forest is not a collection of species. It is a community of relationships.
Robert’s work encourages a deeper kind of attention. A mushroom is connected to a tree. A medicinal plant belongs to a habitat, season and ecological community. Human knowledge of those species carries histories of observation, experimentation and relationship. Learning plant medicine, then, is not simply about memorizing uses. It means learning to recognize the organism, understand where it lives, study what is known about it, respect the knowledge that surrounds it and continue observing it for yourself. That philosophy feels much more appropriate for Lasting Embers than positioning him primarily around “natural remedies.”

Work
The Fungal Pharmacy
A comprehensive guide to the medicinal mushrooms and lichens of North America, bringing together identification, traditional and contemporary uses, preparation and research. This should probably be first. It’s a 608-page work covering medicinal North American fungi and remains one of the clearest representations of his life’s work.
Work
Moss Medicine
An exploration of mosses and other bryophytes through ethnobotany, traditional use, contemporary research and ecology. Published in March 2026, Moss Medicine continues Robert’s long-term investigation of the medicinal and ecological significance of often-overlooked organisms.
Work
A Cree Healer and His Medicine Bundle
This belongs here because it represents another dimension of Robert’s work around plant knowledge, medicine and the people who carry that knowledge. It is also listed among his significant works in his teaching biography.
Work
Herbal Allies
A more personal entry into Robert’s relationship with plant medicine and another useful counterpoint to the reference-heavy Fungal Pharmacy.
