    Filmmaker · Forager · Educator

Kevin Kossowan explores what happens when we learn to pay closer attention to the places we live. Through foraging, wild food, filmmaking and time in the field, his work follows the relationships between landscape, season, food and culture — and the knowledge that emerges from participating in them.

    What Kevin carries

    1. 01

      Foraging & Wild Food

Identifying wild foods is only the beginning. Kevin’s practice connects identification with habitat, seasonality, harvesting, preparation and ecology. Learning where something grows — and what grows around it — develops a deeper understanding of the landscape itself.

    2. 02

      Food & Place

Food offers a way to understand place. Kevin’s work explores terroir, regional food systems and what becomes possible when cooking begins with the ingredients a particular landscape and season actually provide.

    3. 03

      Hunting, Fishing & Gathering

Hunting, fishing and gathering create direct relationships with food and landscape. Kevin’s practice considers not only how food is acquired, but the responsibilities, skills and knowledge involved in harvesting, processing and using it well.

    4. 04

      Documentary Storytelling

Kevin uses filmmaking to document knowledge rooted in people and place. His documentary practice follows food, ecology and culture into the field, allowing lived knowledge and the people who carry it to become the centre of the story.

“The more you learn about a place, the more there is to notice.”

    — Kevin Kossowan

    About Kevin

Food is the doorway. The land is the teacher.

For Kevin, learning wild food is about far more than identifying what can be eaten. It is a way of becoming more attentive to season, habitat, weather, ecology and the relationships between species. Over time, the landscape becomes more legible — and a place that once seemed familiar begins revealing how much there still is to learn.

Kevin Kossowan is an Alberta-based filmmaker, forager and educator whose work explores wild food, regional food systems and our relationships with place.
